Our first day of work with Students International began with gathering for morning worship and devotions. There are about 4 other groups here, and after devotions we all went to our various sites, some to do veteranary work, others to the school in El Gorrion, while our group went to do work on the community center near El Gorrion. We each worked on a variety of tasks around the center including building cabinets, painting, plastering, and a caulking project. over the next three weeks our team will also be working on designing and bulding a new type of chicken coop as well as designing a solar-powered lumber dryer. We also had the chance to walk through El Gorrion, where we saw the unfinished sewer and water systems, walked up and down the steep hill to the stream where the women do all the laundry, awalked on the dirt streets between their small houses - and yet everywhere we went we were greeted with a friendly "buenos dias" and a genuine smile. These people, like our host families in Magdalena, are incredibly kind and generous. Actually, Heather, Katy, and I are in for quite an adventure with our host family because our host mom - Evas - had a baby tday! She and the litle girl will probably return home from the hospital on Thursday; we all can't wait to meet her and are so excited to be here during such an amazing event!
